The Food Processing Department of Mersin University’s Vocational School of Technical Sciences (TBMYO) organized an academic panel themed "Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow" to mark World Food Day on October 16. The event, which explored the future of the food industry from a scientific perspective, was attended by first- and second-year students, faculty members, and the administration of the Vocational School.

Key topics discussed during the panel included:

World Food Day and the Mission of the FAO: Lecturer Dr. Günseli Bobuş Alkaya discussed the founding purpose of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the history of World Food Day, and its role in the global fight against hunger.

Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals: Lecturer Merve Çarıkçıoğlu delivered a presentation titled "A Scientific Approach to a Healthier Future," in which she explored innovative food components that contribute directly to health—going beyond basic nutrition—and their place in modern science.

Genetically Modified Foods and Climate-Resilient Agriculture: Head of Department, Assistant Professor Ayşin Güzel Değer, explained the biotechnological foundations and safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), emphasizing the importance of scientific literacy. She also introduced the "AgriSense AI" project—supported at the COP31 Higher Education Council (YÖK) Pavilion—highlighting the critical role of artificial intelligence in water efficiency and climate-resilient agriculture. The panel, which concluded with interactive questions from the students, highlighted the importance of sustainable production, food security, and innovative solutions.

As the Food Processing Department of the Vocational School of Technical Sciences, we would like to thank the school administration, our esteemed faculty members, and all the students who participated in and supported our event.

"The future will be built by those who protect our food by adding value to it."

Happy World Food Day – October 16, 2026!
